Amid our busy lives, it's all too easy to overlook our well-being, but it is important to hit pause and give ourselves the care and attention we truly deserve. Well, here's a day that's all about you, International Self-Care Day. It is observed on July  24th every year and serves as a reminder to prioritise self-love and embrace the art of nurturing our mental and physical health.  We spoke to our expert who shared their insights on the same.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), self-care encompasses actions taken by individuals, families, and communities to promote and maintain their health, prevent diseases, and manage illnesses and disabilities. It emphasises the active role we play in caring for our well-being, and it is a powerful tool in fostering a healthier and more resilient society.

Paying Attention to Mental Well-Being

Dr Krishna Veer Singh, Co-founder and CEO, Lissun, mental health and emotional wellness startup, believes that our mental well-being is as vital as our physical health. He said, “Taking care of ourselves also entails giving equal priority to our mental well-being. In today’s fast-paced world, many people battle with sleep issues, finding happiness, managing anger, coping with work-related stress, and dealing with mental conditions, such as depression and anxiety.”

Dr Singh added, “When we prioritise our mental health and take steps to manage stress and address emotional issues, we lay a strong foundation for our overall well-being. By holistically caring for ourselves, we are better equipped to care for others and contribute positively to society. It enables us to show empathy, support others, and spread kindness in our communities.”

Balancing Mental and Physical Health

Dr Gorav Gupta, Co-founder, Emoneeds, sheds light on the disparity between the emphasis placed on physical health over mental health. He points out that despite the rising concern over mental health issues in India, many still neglect it due to the misconception that mental health problems are less significant.

Dr Gupta added, “By increasing awareness about the significance of mental health checkups, we can motivate individuals to give equal importance to their mental well-being as they do to their physical health. Normalising regular visits to mental health professionals also fosters a proactive and preventive approach, where potential concerns can be identified early and managed effectively. By destigmatising seeking support, people are more likely to seek help without fear of judgement, ultimately leading to improved mental resilience and overall quality of life.”
