World Lymphoma Day serves as a reminder of the importance of early detection and awareness of lymphoma, a group of blood cancers that affect the lymphatic system. While some lymphoma symptoms, like swollen lymph nodes, are widely recognised, like any other disease, lymphoma also presents some lesser-known signs that can be crucial indicators of this cancer.

According to a study published in the ‘Frontiers of Oncology,’ India reported a whopping 11,230 and 41,607 new diagnoses of Hodgkin's and Non Hodgkin's lymphoma respectively. Keeping in mind this huge number, the team of OnlyMyHealth reached out to Dr Srinath Bharadwaj, Medical oncologist, Apollo Cancer Institutes, Hyderabad on the occasion of World Lymphoma Day 2023, to create awareness about these lesser known symptoms of Lymphoma.

Unknown Symptoms of Lymphoma

Rare Symptoms of Lymphoma

Listing a set of rare lymphoma symptoms, Dr Bharadwaj said, “The common symptoms of lymphoma are swollen lymph nodes, fever, drenching night sweats, weight loss, itchiness, and loss of appetite. These are fairly well known among lymphoma patients. However, lymphoma also presents some less typical symptoms. It is important to be aware of these symptoms to ensure timely diagnosis.”

Back Pain

Back pain can sometimes be a lesser-known symptom of lymphoma, especially if it's not associated with any obvious injury or strain. This pain may be due to enlarged lymph nodes pressing on the nerves in the back, and may be localised or radiate to different areas of the back.

Swollen Legs and Arms

Lymphoma can disrupt the normal flow of lymphatic fluid, leading to swelling (lymphedema) in the legs or arms. This can be uncomfortable as it makes the affected limb feel heavy and affect mobility, and may occur alongside other symptoms.

Abdominal Pain or Fullness

Lymphoma affecting abdominal lymph nodes can cause discomfort or a feeling of fullness in the belly. This may be accompanied by bloating or changes in bowel habits.

Skin Rashes or Itching

Some types of lymphoma can manifest on the skin, causing rashes, redness, or persistent itching. These skin changes can sometimes be mistaken for other dermatological conditions.

Chest Pain or Cough

Lymphoma can involve lymph nodes in the chest, leading to symptoms like chest pain, coughing, or difficulty breathing, due to the pressure placed by enlarged lymph nodes on the airways of lungs. These symptoms are often confused with respiratory issues.

Jaundice

Jaundice is another rare symptom of lymphoma. In lymphoma, jaundice can occur when the cancer affects the liver or bile ducts, causing obstruction or dysfunction in the flow of bile. This can result in the buildup of bilirubin and lead to jaundice.

Testicular Swelling In Men

Testicular swelling can be a symptom of lymphoma, although it is relatively rare. When it comes to lymphoma, testicular involvement is more commonly associated with other symptoms such as enlarged lymph nodes in the groin, abdomen, or neck.

How Does Lymphoma Cause Its Symptoms

Rare Symptoms Of Lymphoma

Dr Bharadwaj shared, “Lymphoma is a tumour of the lymphocytes which are the policemen in our body. The lymph nodes can be assumed as police stations which clear the body of infections. They can turn into tumours called lymphomas when mutation occurs in the lymphocytes. These cancerous lymphocytes assemble in the lymph nodes and cause swelling.” When these swollen lymph nodes press on the nearby tissues, that is when these uncommon symptoms of lymphoma are manifested.

On World Lymphoma Day 2023, it's vital for you to gain awareness of these signs, so you can seek timely medical attention. Experiencing any of these symptoms without a discernible reason does not mean that you have lymphoma. However, it is definitely a cause for concern. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms, consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Early detection and treatment are key to managing lymphoma effectively and improving the chances of a successful recovery. Stay vigilant, stay informed, and spread awareness about lymphoma and its lesser-known signs.
