In a society when many people want to lose weight, there are individuals who face the issue of gaining weight. For some ladies, maintaining a healthy and balanced weight is as vital as reducing weight. Ayurveda, an ancient holistic treatment system, provides natural medicines and practices that can assist girls in gaining weight in a healthy and sustainable manner.

“Ayurveda, a traditional Indian system of medicine that has been practised for thousands of years. It emphasises the importance of balance in all aspects of life, including diet and nutrition. Ayurveda categorises individuals into three primary body types or doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. To determine the most effective remedies for weight gain, it's crucial to identify one's predominant dosha, as the approach may vary,” said Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar.

Balanced Diet

Ayurveda stresses the significance of a balanced and nutritious diet tailored to your dosha. Girls looking to gain weight should focus on calorie-dense foods like whole grains, healthy fats, and lean proteins.

Herbal Supplements

Certain herbs and supplements can aid in weight gain. Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Gokshura are commonly recommended Ayurvedic herbs that can boost metabolism and promote weight gain. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before using these supplements.

“Gokhru, also known as gokshur, is a tonic for both men and women's reproductive systems. It is said to help with digestion, blood purification, kidney and bladder health, sperm count, and hormone balance for optimal weight gain. It can replenish as well as boost strength and vitality. It is a famous Ayurvedic herb for increasing life, vigour, and muscle mass,” said Dr Manisha Mishra Goswami, Medical Adviser, Charak Pharma Pvt Ltd.

Favour Sweet and Nourishing Foods

Ayurveda recommends emphasising sweet, sour, and salty tastes in your diet to stimulate appetite and support weight gain. Dates, figs, bananas, and almonds are excellent choices.

Regular Meal Times

Stick to a regular meal schedule, and avoid skipping meals. Eating at consistent times helps improve digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Avoid Excessive Physical Activity

While exercise is essential for overall health, girls aiming to gain weight should focus on strength training and low-intensity workouts rather than vigorous cardio exercises.

Stress Management

High stress levels can hinder weight gain. Practice relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation to reduce stress and promote a healthy appetite.

Adequate Sleep

Ensure you get enough quality sleep, as poor sleep patterns can affect metabolism and appetite.
